Castor Oil

Castor Oil (Ricinus communis).

Castor oil has been used since ancient times as a natural remedy to treat skin and hair related problems. Enriched with vitamin E, omega fatty acids and proteins, castor oil is great for massage, skin care, hair care and most topical treatments.

Castor oil comprises a host of beneficial components including Omega 3 fatty acids, ricinoleic acid, flavonoids, Vitamin E, phenolic acids, amino acids, terpenoids and phytosterols. These components make it deeply moisturizing and act as occlusive moisturizer, which prevent or reduce water loss through the outer layer of the skin. 

Castor oil is thick, and is often mixed with other skin-friendly oils before applying. Depending on what you're using it for, consider blending with Apricot Kernel, Coconut Grapeseed, Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil.

To promote better absorption of castor oil into the skin, dilute castor oil in the ratio at least 1:1 with other oils which allows castor oil to penetrate deep within the skin.

Why use Castor Oil?:

1. Skin Care

Castor oil helps reduce appearance of wrinkles, deep moisturizes and maintains complextion.

It diffuses into the skin and stimulates the production of collagen which smoothens and hydrates the skin. The abundance of triglycerides in castor oil confers to maintain skin moisture and helps in treating dry skin. In addition, the humectant properties can retain the moisture by preventing the water loss and keep the skin well hydrated throughout the day.The richness of monosaturated fatty acids in castor oil makes the skin smooth and softer when applied as a facial oil. It can also stimulate the growth of healthy skin tissues and revamp the uneven skin tone thus enhancing the skin texture and complexion.

2. Face Cleanser

The natural astringent properties of castor oil help in clearing off the impurities from the skin and it is suitable for cleansing oily skin too. The richness of essential fatty acids in castor oil facilitates in reinstating natural moisture balance of the skin. Gently apply castor oil on your face and massage in circular motions. Wash off with warm washcloth. This clears the clogged pores and heals acne.

3. Massage and Topical Treatments

With its natural anti inflammatory and humectant properties Castor makes an excellent choice of oil for massage. Because Castor is such a thick oil, it is rarely used alone. Try combining it with Grapeseed or Sweet Almond Oil.

Though applying castor oil to the skin is considered safe for most, it can cause an allergic reaction in some people. If you're very sensitive or have many allergies, please test on skin before applying to larger area.
