Geranium - The Secret to Beautiful Skin

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium Essential Oil  (Pelargonium graveolens) is one of the most specific oils for women. It's strength lies in it's ability to balancing hormones, make skin look younger and healing the heart.

No matter what your skin type is, oily, dry or combination, Geranium is the answer. It balances the pH of your skin, so it adds moisture where you are too dry and it regulates oil production where too much.

This ability to give your skin exactly what it needs is called 'balancing'.

Aside from keeping wrinkles in check, Geranium oil also helps keep your skin young and glowing by renewing blemished tissues. It can help fade acne scars and tone down the appearance of dark spots by promoting a balanced distribution of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin darkening.

This floral oil is perfect for dry, aging or sensitive skin and its many skin renewing benefits make it a popular ingredient in the very best skin care products.

1. Reduce Wrinkles

Over the years, your skin slowly starts to lose it's elasticity, and in those years wrinkles show up. Geranium oil’s astringent effect allows skin tissues to tighten and contract, significantly reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It also has antioxidant effects to slow down skin aging, helping you look younger. This oil is such a simple addition to your skin care rituals. It can be as easy as adding a few drops to your existing moisturizer or face oil.

2. Acne and Breakouts

It's hard to have glowing skin if you’re also dealing with breakouts. We spoke earlier of the 'balancing' effect of Geranium. This balancing helps to regulate excess oil which could later clog your pores and cause a breakout. That’s why Geranium is a 'go to' oil for clearing up skin. It is antibacterial, antiseptic and reduces inflammation.

Another benefit of Geranium for acne and breakouts is it's ability to heal wounds and reduce scars. If you have 'picked' at a few spots on your face, Geranium will help to heal your skin quickly, leaving no scars behind.

3. Dark Circles

Are you always trying to cover up the dark circles under your eyes with make up? Geranium to the rescue!

It can help tone down the appearance of dark spots by promoting a balanced distribution of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin darkening. The astringent and anti inflammatory effects of Geranium make this the perfect oil to add under the eyes.

4. Revitalize Skin

Facial steams are a “must-have” strategy in your skincare routine. Facial steams revitalize tired, dull-looking skin, open the pores allowing toxins and junk to release and they boost circulation which can help remove dark circles and tighten sagging skin.

Thankfully, you don’t need a professional quality facial steamer in order to get great results. Another thing I love about Geranium? It always puts me in a good mood. So, while I’m steaming my face I’m also relaxing and going to my “happy” place. 🙂

Recipe: Facial Steam

  • Boil water in a kettle.
  • Pour water into a large bowl and place safely on a counter or table.
  • Now, take a few minutes while water cools a bit to put your hair back and find a towel.
  • Add 3 drops Geranium Essential oil to the bowl
  • Place face about 30cm or 12 inches from bowl with towel over head to keep the steam in.
  • Let the warm steam penetrate your skin. Breathe in the anxiety relieving and lovely aroma of the Geranium
  • Your face should not be burning hot, just warm steaming and you should be able to breathe easily
  • After 5-10 min you will actually be able to feel the dirt and oil on your face that has escaped from your pores.
  • Rinse with warm water.

*Common sense and caution are needed, as you will be dealing with hot water. Please ensure a safe surrounding!
